Polycarbonate (PC) is a synthetic plastic that is tough, durable, lightweight, and much stronger than flat glass and acrylic plastics.
Advantages: At the same thickness, polycarbonate sheet is 30 times stronger than acrylic sheet and more than 200 times stronger than glass. Often considered “unbreakable” in most applications, it has the best resistance to breakage due to its high impact strength. It also has the highest maximum use temperature. Coatings can improve flame retardancy. Has excellent machinability and can be easily thermoformed.
Negative Features or Disadvantages: The material requires protection to ensure UV stability. The softness makes polycarbonate sheet very easy to scratch unless it is coated. This material is also the most expensive compared to other transparent plastic materials.
Common Applications: Some applications include exhibitions, POP displays, signage, skylights, and windows. Today, polycarbonate sheet is commonly used in medical face shields, temporary partitions, lightweight lenses, and goggles.
Acrylic Sheet (Polymethyl Methacrylate)
Acrylic sheet is a transparent, rigid thermoplastic material widely used as a shatterproof alternative to glass.
Advantages: It is optically clear, UV-stable, and has glass-like qualities, but weighs only half as much and is up to 10 times more impact-resistant. It is easy to form, bond, and polish. Due to its hardness, it has very high scratch resistance compared to PC and is also a versatile and cost-effective material.
Negative Characteristics or Disadvantages: It is exceptionally hard and transparent, but the hardness leads to brittleness compared to other plastic materials such as polycarbonate.
Common Applications: Some common acrylic applications include automotive trim, protective cases, lenses, lamps, signage, and POP displays.
